The days when Boys Love is dominated by Thai and Japanese dramas with worldwide reach are waning. The Philippines is the new entrant to the BL world that “celebrates love in this purest form, beyond the shackles of simple gender or sexuality.” The success of popular Thai series like “TharnType the Series” and “2gether the Series” might have set a precedent, but the fact remains that the Boys Love dimension is witnessing the onset of a major revolution in the form of Pinoy BL. Although Pinoy Boys Love hasn’t yet quite reached the international territory that Thai BL creators enjoy or brought forth the same sensual intimacy they display, Pinoy BL is fast becoming a contender and a global phenomenon in this genre.Continue reading “Special Feature: Different Flavors of Pinoy Love [Opinion]”

An Unabashedly “Feel Good” Love Story?
Do you know the secret behind every Fairy tale? Cinderella? Aurora? Or Snow White? None of them were perfect from the beginning. Each of them had to face struggles to meet their Prince Charming. If they didn’t face turmoil from the beginning, there wouldn’t be a storyline, right? Anyone who is imperfect and has the inner strength to work past those imperfections deserves a “Happily Ever After.”

Pinoy BL dramas are fast broadening the BL genre into variations on a theme. The success of Thai Dramas “TharnType the Series” and “2gether The Series” pushed the Filipino Television Industry into a new kind of revolution. Pinoy BL is currently the new trend, and many production houses are trying to reap the profits of the “Boys Love” phenomenon. When I received a tip to reach out to IdeaFirst Company barely 12 hours before the premiere of the series Gameboys on YouTube, I never really expected anything much from a series that was marketed as a virtual meeting of two young gamers set amongst the current chaos of the Pandemic that has swept across all parts of the globe and transformed the very landscape of our normal.Continue reading “Games, Love & The Pandemic | The Gameboys Global Phenomenon”
After the lovingly crafted Episode 3 of Sakristan, beautiful camera work, amazing lighting, and well-acted, even if the script was a bit hard to understand, I am optimistic about this episode. Gone is the soft-focus camera work, actors staring off when talking to each other. In their place is a well thought out episode which gave me all the hope for this one. After the anticlimactic moment of Christian leaving the church with no fanfare or drama whatsoever, I’m hoping for something that continues Episode 3’s mood.Continue reading “Sakristan (Altar Boy) – Episode 4 [Review]”
Terrence (Kyle Velino) makes his presence known to Cai (Elijah Canlas) and barges into his game livestream, throwing Cai out of sorts. Terrence then “friends” him and starts to spill some details about Gav (Kokoy De Santos). This disclosure leads to Cai questioning Gav’s intentions creating tension between them.Continue reading “Gameboys The Series – Episode 5 [Review]”
Sakristan is the love story of two men from different walks of life. I know that sounds familiar. That it sounds like the plot for hundreds of Boys Love series but this one is different. By throwing convention out the window and spending twenty minutes an episode just doing whatever the show wants, it’s become an indie darling. In Episode 1, it began at the end of a scene then going back in time to bring you to that moment. Whether it’s illogically cuddling in a locked office on a summer day, so one of them doesn’t die of freezing, or a singing and dancing contest to Lady Gaga reworked songs promoting breastfeeding, one thing is clear this show will do what it wants.Continue reading “Sakristan (Altar Boy) – Episode 3 [Review]”

Beginning with the words on how the episode is a tribute to the unique and theatrical American musician Lady Gaga, anyone surprised its a musical needs to enjoy it with headphones. After the opening episode, “Touch – Move” had our main characters Christian and Zach cuddling together for warmth. It’s a surprise to see them now facing off against each other in a musical production about breastfeeding. Why? ‘Cause it’s Sakristan. That’s why!Continue reading “Sakristan (Altar Boy) – Episode 2 [Review]”
Those things we can’t find closure on, they will haunt us. I think that phrase best described the journey of Mark in Truly Very Yours, a new Pinoy BL series that aims to bring more colors into the emerging BL industry in the Philippines. Surrounded by tough competition, such as Gameboys the Series, Hello Stranger, and Sakristan, Truly Very Yours hopes to attract viewers’ attention by offering a simple love story that is close to their daily lives. Although it seems promising, I can’t stop myself but ask, will it be enough to make it memorable?
Well, let’s find out!Continue reading “Truly Very Yours Review (Episodes 1-5) [Review]”
