My Day the Series – Episode 5 [Review]

I had a battle with myself over this episode.  My bias came into play and caused me some issues, so I gave everything another go. I’ll be interested in what you guys think. Let’s dig into the episode, shall we? 😁

The Good, The Bad, and the Meh

Let’s start off on a positive note. The interaction that takes place at Ace’s house over shared pizza is a true gem of a moment (with the exception of ketchup on pizza – yuck🤢). There is genuine character development that takes place during this scene. Ace shows Sky his vulnerability and opens up about his past.  Sky listens, and the two begin to connect with each other on a deeper level.  Even Ms. Becky is toned down, a more warm maternal version of her original character.  She behaves more like a mother when fussing over Ace.

There is another scene where Ace gets to show his care with tender feelings.  I don’t want to spoil it for you, but he shows his sweet side then. I can’t believe this is the same character I couldn’t stand in the first episode. I’m rooting for him to fall in love and for his happiness. I have to give kudos to Aki for showing me a more nuanced performance.

Sky’s family dynamics are more cohesive and believable in this episode. His mother comforts, scolds and cajoles him.  Along with these actions, her physical gestures show a maternal connection. She rubs his back and tousles his hair. The actors have gotten more comfortable with each other, and it shows.  Ken defends his family when they are being attacked.  He behaves like a loving brother and son.  This itself is a big change of pace from the first episode where the supposed close family unit felt like strangers interacting. I’m glad to see progress here.

Moira. That’s all I can say without spoiling it.  Irrationality, thy name is Moira. She is a character I hope to see less of, and it looks like I might get my wish. 🤭

Sky grapples with himself, trying to figure out what he’s feeling. It’s hard to express a character’s internal thoughts and feelings.  Miko manages to pull it off. He’s showing his hurt, confusion, and even his attraction to another man through facial expressions and body language. We see the shift in dynamics between the main characters, and I am living for it.

On to the not so good in this episode.  I have watched the dynamics of the main couple make a shift to being closer in the last few episodes. The barriers have come down, and they are on friendly terms.  However, I don’t see them flirting in front of others. I’m confused as to why people keep jumping to conclusions that there is something more between them. Maybe it’s a cultural thing. I’m used to seeing skinship and closeness in Thai BL dramas, but I haven’t seen many Pinoy shows, so it might not be normal to be that close in that specific culture.

The most irritating part, in my opinion, had to be the bar fight.  I have to talk about this, why it bothered me, and how another look and a different perspective shifted my way of thinking. It’s not giving too much away to say the two main jock characters are homophobic in the extreme. We met these knuckleheads in the first episode and knew immediately they were the dumb mean jock stereotype seen in college or high school shows. I’m not surprised they are homophobic assholes who are discussing whether Sky is sleeping with his boss.  What surprised me the most had to be Sky’s response to being called gay and being teased that he’s sleeping with Ace.

Here’s where my bias comes in. I was mad that Sky was offended at being called gay. I thought he was a more progressive character than that.  I assumed from his earlier interactions with gay characters that he didn’t have a problem with it.  And I assumed that his response would be to shrug it off. Words are just words.  So the homophobia almost ruined this episode for me. 

When I spoke to @FNG, he was surprised at my reaction. He and another colleague enjoyed this episode. When I talked about my issue with the episode, he brought a different perspective to light. His perspective, one of a gay man, was different from mine.
